Class Reflection

Well FOR ONE I think I need to manage my time better. I wish I could have been more on point with the blog assignments I just never have the time to sit down and type something.

First AHA moment would be the very first time I bombed a quiz. Needless to say that would be a very good aha.

Second moment was when we were assigned that damn Internet Research Project. I personally found it distressing in its length and mind numbingly boring in its results. No more Internet Research Projects next quarter.

Third when we had to do our Presentation I guess I haven't spoken in public a lot, I've sang in public but to just to present a power point makes me very nervous. I think its because I have no connection to the material there by making me super antsy and prone to swallowing words.

Well Ill leave with this sketch from my portfolio it is called "Caught in the Current" don't let them drag you down.

Television

Length: 1:12
This video shows you that even in the midst of the Obama mania there are some that will satire it for television sake .

Media Ethics/Media Law

I am not sure if this is too the assignment but I know of a Privacy Intrusion Law suit that was leveled against Google by Rosemary Port. Basically this chick was smack talking some super model online on Blog Spot then the model sues Google for slander and demands the user to be named. Google in turn gave the model the users real name. Rosemary Port in turn sued Google for violation of privacy. http://www.reputationdefender.com/blog/2009/08/27/rosemary-ports-privacy-lawsuit-against-google-is-a-guaranteed-loser/

Propaganda in Advertising

Some techniques of the Propaganda that I found on Wikipedia.org are

Ad Nauseam
This argument approach uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach works best when media sources are limited or controlled by the propagator.
I would think that Nike has cornered this market completely with their Swoosh Logo

Common man
The "plain folks" or "common man" approach attempts to convince the audience that the propagandist's positions reflect the common sense of the people.
This is also a good one because who wouldn't feel for the simple common man I mean that dude could have been my neighbors dad for all I know .

Electronic News

For my half-hour new show I went with something that had a very liberal bias I did this plain and simply because the right has such a horrible sense of humor that I don't think I can sit for half an hour and endure it. My chose was The Daily Show with John Stewart. The era of fake news is at a high right now, when Jon Stewart can interview President Obama and then go on to make a joke at Palin we that's just good television folks. Being on Comedy central most of the advertisement were targeted at my demographic squarely. Car insurance, beer, fast foods, dirty cartoons the works.  Lead story of the night being the Interview at the end of the show with President Obama. Now I don't think that the anchors on the Daily Show have segments as much as they have bits that they do. Concerning the staff we have the crazy right wing nuts who lampoon their own dogma with their buffoonish antics . On the other side we have the liberal almost granola crunching wussies(a direct description from one of those Right Wing nuts).I pretty much blanked out until the Obama interview which was riveting. Its a good system to make me watch the show. Not having a TeVo I can't record live TV so I had to wait till the end to get to the juicy part.

Internet

I see so many networking sites on the wiki page there must be at least a hundred. Some that I have never seen before would be Academia.edu. This site and its services are completely foreign to me I mean do academics really need to network well apparently they do. I personally use Facebook the most and with that only sparingly and only if I need to get a hold of a far away connection. I like to go out on the weekends and club it up, but sometimes I don't have time to call to RSVP with the power of Facebook clubs now do all their promotions and Reservations online. Sometimes this can be annoying when they bombard you with messages. At the same time more options means more effective decision making.

Magazines

Magazine Name : Oil Spoils

My Magazine will be more a way for curators and wholesalers to see and browse the upcoming talent the magazine will act as the buffer/broker for the transactions that take place. There is already an existing magazine called Art Forum. They don't actually deal but a lot of galleries and artist pay good money for valuable space. We will focus only on oil paintings no abstract modern nonsense .

The target demographic would be students teachers dealers and collectors of art. I would say on a pure aesthetic value it would even appeal to the common day person because of the beatiful works being displayed.

Art Forum and other lower end art magazines have in the recent years been accused of being biased and preferential in its assessment and managing of the works that they display. We will differ by not charging our advertisers a penny instead we ask only of a very modest 5 percent on all transactions involving any of the works in the catalog. We will never let money sully our judgement. With a smaller more focused selection of works it will breed an intense but healthy competition.

Advertisers:
Dick Blick Art Stores
Gamblin Oil Paints
Winsor Oil Paints
Gesso Primers
Uthrect Art Stores

Articles:
The High Cost of Being You : Dilemmas of the Starving Artist

Auctions at Christies : In the Den of the Beast

Bristling with Anger : 10 Ways to Avoid Brush Wear

Rising Star Showcase : 50 Young New Faces

Counterfeiting : How to Spot the Fakes

For the cover we will keep it very simple white border around one full sized image that the editorial staff will decide on.

Books

Well I would say that every book that I have read have had a profound effect in my life I have accumulated a wide genre choice of books so I will try and narrow it down to the most profound 3.

The first books that ever came into my possession as a child was a run of novels written by the author Piers Anthony. These were a favorite because they drew you in with these almost fantastical covers and yet don't try to dumb down or belittle the reader. Very impish humor mixed in with dark satire. Dirty puns I never got as a kid I get now with re-reading that is the sign of a good series is when it can
 make you re-read.

Now as I got older my taste got a little darker and more seasoned when it came to reading fantasy novels. With that in mind I tended to go towards books with grittiers tones. I fell in love with a British author by the name of Simon R.Green and his detective like series cocerning a place that is always midnight The Nightside.

So now a days I read what ever strikes my fancy at the moment. And at the moment I am reading Tim Lebbons Dusk and Dawn book both horror novels both very dark.

Media Impact

There are many faucets of media that permeate our daily life's. As we go about our tasks we are bombarded with sights and sounds that are keyed to make us want to consume. Where ever we go we can not escape the drone of the media machine. I will focus on the most crucial and aspect, the Internet. Whenever I log on to anything now a days there is always about a 30 second buffer of noise IE. ads asking me to buy this or meet that. The Internet generates revenue through advertisement, if the radio invited ad spaces then the Internet just took it to the inevitable outcome. We don't seem to mind though, I think this is due to the fact that we can block out the noise and just hit the mute button. Some sites have wised up to this and have made it mandatory. Pandora once allowed you to turn the mute button on their ads but as of lately doing that would make it so all your songs thereafter do not play. The biggest source of income for sites like Facebook and Twitter would come from their advertisements. I personally am not a fan of all the ads that permeate the cyber space but I know that upstart sites need these kinds of revenues to expand and that current franchise what to reach a new subset of consumers.

Media Autobiography

First off my name is Nghia Tran and I am a Fine Art Major. All my life  the world of entertainment has fascinated me whether it be something as far reaching as the television to something as personal as a book it blows me away that someone created those thing literally out of nothing. We have 8 areas of study so I will try to break it down in a way that will show you my relationship with each media.

Too say that television and popular media affected my youth is an understatement. From the comics that I read to the songs that I listened too I am subconsciously being reprogrammed. And yet sometimes I feel that I am the one molding these choices made for me by the norm. My art reflects the dark and seedy underbelly of these supposed norms. For me to fully be dedicated to my work I must be able to comprehend the inner machinations of the world.
We hear things that sometimes we wish we can unheard and likewise to things that we only catch a passing glance at. Music to me has the grayest areas of interpretation and can also the most heavily divided area of media. People love and hate with much more fervor when it comes to their favorite bands or artist. When I raise the subject of popular music I always get camps of extremist. For me anything that can inspire that much devotion can be a double-edged sword. I see garbage being played on the airwaves and then I go see a local band sweat and bled for a half packed bar brimming with smoke and broken dreams, plainly spoken I find this fact disgusting.
I want to rebel against the popular masses but I realize in my failed attempt that I am so far deeply entrenched that it is like fighting against something as natural as the ocean tides or an Amazonian quick sand trap. Every day we wake up and plug into the main frame. It is so insidious and unassuming that we pass it off as commonplace practices. Now we are at a crossroads of communication where we either as a society use this wealth of knowledge to ask those questions that might seem too out of reach before. Either that or enter an information deprived society that some parts of America and the world are in right now.
